On 2nd January, 1915, the 1st King’s Royal Rifle Corps battalion of 6 Brigade, 2nd Division moved into the front line near Richebourg-l’Avoue where they remained until relieved on 15th January. In the morning of 6th January, the day on which William Underwood was killed, their trenches came under trench mortar fire which soon stopped after retaliatory fire began. |
